low carb faqs

Question: What is a low carb diet?

Answer: A low carb diet is a eating plan the limits the consumption of foods that are high in carbohydrate. Instead of following a strict eating plan, you focus on consuming foods that are low in carbohydrates.

Question: How does a low carb eating plan cause weight loss?

Answer:Most low carb diets have a single uniting principle - too much carbohydrate causes weight gain and prevents weight loss. Low carb diets cut down the amount of carbohydrates you eat rather than focusing on cutting calories or fat, the usual principle behind most weight-loss programs. So the formula is:
reduced carbohydrate consumption + increased protein comsumption = weight loss and weight control for most people.

Question: Is there scientific evidence on low carb diets?

Answer:Yes. Two clinical trials were first published in the New England Journal of Medicine in May, 2003. Both studies showed that by reducing carbohydrate consumption and increasing protein comsumption could be the idea method of weightloss and weight control for many people. The studies also concluded that the low-carb dieters had lower levels of triglycerides (harmful blood fats that can cause a buildup of plaque in arteries) than those dieters that followed a low-fat diet. The low-carb dieters also had higher levels of HDL (good cholesterol) than those dieters on a low-fat diet.

Question: How do I count carbs?

Answer:First of all, we hope to teach you to count "net carbs". Net carbs are determined by the following formula:
carbs - dietary fiber - sugar alcohols (nutrition description for artificial sweetener) = net carbs
For a low carb eating plan, you will want to keep your net carb count low.
